Out of Place

Out of place
On a recent get-away trip, we were driving into Asheville, North Carolina, and suddenly what looked like a large dog ran across the road in front of us. Only, it wasn’t a dog…it was a young black bear! Even though it was about a hundred yards away (that was close enough, thank you) it clearly stood out in that urban setting, because it was completely out of place.
It made me think about how much effort we spend “fitting in” to this world, when God has called us out from it. We are to be “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light;” (1Peter 2:9). We are just as out of place as that little black bear; you could dress him up, teach him to behave in a mannerly fashion, and even to play nicely with others….but he still wouldn’t belong.
Many years ago, I was taught the value of a life lived in a way that was “distinctively Christian.” Not to earn my way to heaven, but to reflect on the outside what God had done on the inside of me. Or as Paul said in Romans 12:1-2 we are to be “transformed” and not “conformed” to the world in which we live, for we are simply “passing through.”
This call to be distinctive is one reason that Thy Word Network is so intentional about our program content. We don’t believe God has called us to be so like the world that listeners feel just as comfortable listening to us as they would with any secular station; we don’t want to just be positive and encouraging when we need to be challenged and exhorted to be “holy” and “peculiar” and to behave like a “royal priesthood,” serving the King and doing His will each day; and most of all, we want to drive our listeners deeply into God’s Word, for there we find all we need for this life, and more importantly, for eternity.
We might be as out-of-place as a black bear on a city street…but that’s OK…it’s what God has called us to be!
Thought you would like to know.
